Rental Crisis

by liau on September 3, 2008

We’re almost set for the big move to a new rental property this weekend. The keys have already been handed over and started with the cleanup. Well, I can’t wait for the whole thing to be over. Though, if I think about it, it wasn’t really so bad. I think the most difficult part is in fact finding the place to move to. A succession of home loan interest rate rises in the past year have changed the real estate market altogether, making it a buyer’s market if you want to buy (i.e. due to foreclosed properties, etc.) a property. However, it is seemingly a landlord’s market on the rental side with rental rates pushing up and up. The rental crisis is apparently true not just for Sydney but other capital cities as well. Not that we are planning to move again in the next few months, but I do hope that it will soon be over.

Yes, there is definitely a shortage of good quality rental properties at reasonable rents in Sydney. We looked at over 50 properties before we found one that we could live in (and we are not particularly fussy) - the standard of some places was terrible - some were incredibly dirty, others were falling apart, and others were just plain old-fashioned. Glad that you have found somewhere suitable and hope that you have now settled in your new home.

Best wishes,
